The question
Do periodic 5-day low-calorie cycles change markers linked to aging?
Study design
100 generally healthy US adults randomized to 3 monthly 5-day cycles of a plant-based, low-calorie, low-protein diet or their usual diet. [1]
What they found
Three cycles reduced body weight, body fat, blood pressure and IGF-1, with larger improvements in people with higher baseline risk factors. No serious adverse effects were reported. [1]
Limitations
Short trial, marker outcomes, high dropout. The senior author founded a company that sells the diet kits.
What this does not mean
Fasting protocols are not right for everyone. People with diabetes, a history of eating disorders, or who are pregnant should not try them without medical supervision.
