The question
Does oral magnesium help older adults fall asleep?
Study design
Systematic review and meta-analysis of 3 randomized trials, 151 older adults. [1]
What they found
Magnesium shortened time to fall asleep by about 17 minutes compared with placebo; total sleep time did not change significantly. [1]
Limitations
Few, small, older trials with risk of bias. The authors rated the evidence low quality.
What this does not mean
Magnesium is not a treatment for insomnia disorder.
