The question
What is the evidence for spermidine and longevity?
Study design
Mouse feeding studies and an analysis of dietary spermidine and blood pressure and heart outcomes in a human cohort (2016). [1]
What they found
Spermidine extended lifespan and supported heart function in mice. In people, higher dietary intake was associated with lower blood pressure and fewer cardiovascular events. [1]
Limitations
Human data are observational; diet quality may explain the link.
What this does not mean
Foods like wheat germ, soy and aged cheese contain spermidine. Supplements are unproven.
