Vitamin D: fill the gap, skip the hype
Clear role for bone health and correcting low status. Large outcome trials in replete adults were largely null.

- The question
- Who benefits from vitamin D3, and what did large trials find in healthy adults?
- Study design
- VITAL vitamin D arm: 25,871 adults, 2,000 IU/day vs placebo, median 5.3 years. NIH ODS fact sheet for intake guidance. [1][2]
- What they found
- Vitamin D supports calcium absorption and bone health. Many adults run low, especially with little sun exposure or darker skin. In VITAL, supplementation did not lower the primary endpoints in a largely replete population. [1][2]
- Limitations
- Benefit likely depends on starting levels. A blood test is the best way to know yours.
- What this does not mean
- More is not better. Stay within the label and the NIH upper limit unless your clinician advises otherwise.
